The Experts

I have been working with healthcare professionals for over 25 years. As tax partner in our organisation I focus on mitigating tax liabilities.

I oversee the teams work on Superannuation Calculations, Seniority, National Insurance Contributions, Personal and business tax.

I also work closely with our Independent Financial Advisors to ensure our medical clients receive the best advice on their pensions and investments.

I head up the Murray Taylor Medical Team along with my fellow Director Steve Taylor.

I began working with GP surgeries in 2001 while completing my training and have continued this work with Murray Taylor since joining the company in 2005.

I oversee the medical team and am heavily involved with meeting new and potential clients. I also meet with GPs to discuss annual accounts and any other requirements they may have.

I started at Murray Taylor in 2006 and qualified as an accountant with ACCA in 2013. As client Manager in the Arbroath office I oversee the smooth running of the compliance and bookkeeping departments and am the main point of contact for clients.

In relation to the medical department of Murray Taylor, I am the initial point of contact for the practice manager and the GPs and am there throughout the process from preparation of the accounts to the tax returns. I arrange the collection of the surgeries books, oversee the preparation of the accounts by the junior staff and meet with the practice manager with the draft accounts. From there I meet with all GPs to discuss the accounts and collect their personal tax information. Finally, I am involved in pulling together the benchmarking and doctor annual packs including superannuation and insurance calculations.

I am mainly involved in the preparation of GPs accounts which also involves completion of their personal tax returns, annual pension returns and calculations to establish whether any national insurance is due to be refunded.

I then meet with the client along with a director to discuss the accounts and any queries the client may have.

I am also in regular contact with the practice manager throughout the year, where necessary with any queries they may have.

Senior Accounts Assistant

I have been working with GPs since I began my accountancy career at Murray Taylor in June 2013. As a trainee I assist the more senior members of the ‘Medical Team’ with preparing annual accounts, tax returns, quarterly doctor calculations and the preparation of Murray Taylor Doctor’s Packs.

I hope to progress as an accountant specialising in working with medical professionals as I work towards achieving my CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) qualification.

My specialist knowledge:

I am a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. I have a detailed knowledge of taxation and use this in tax planning strategies, which can assist you in retaining more of your hard earned profits. I am in regular correspondence with specialist offices of HMRC and use my experience of dealing with them to gain advance clearance from HMRC for some of our tax planning. I believe that all clients of Murray Taylor need to be informed of technical changes to taxation, which could affect their planning. I also believe that our clients need to be informed of all tax strategies that are available to them.

What I do at Murray Taylor?

I head up the tax planning team. Yes we deal with necessary compliance work but we won’t just prepare your tax return. I work with many talented people on my team and encourage them to develop their ideas for providing tax solutions to problems. We have retained the vast majority of trainees who have qualified with us and what gives me great pleasure is when one of them comes up with an idea that I would have been proud off.

I am also heavily involved with health care professionals; we act for many GP Doctor surgeries, Dentists, Opticians and Vets. With my partner Louise Sim and our talented Health Care Team we ensure that our clients in this specialised area are well advised on matters that directly effect them.

More about me:

I am married to Lynn, have four daughters and six grandchildren who keep me busy and entertained. I am a volunteer worker for Yorkhill Children’s Charity and along with family and friends recently raised £6,000 for the hospital at a sponsored go karting event. As well as my family my interests, some would say addiction, are Dundee Football Club and Skiing. I regularly travel Scotland to watch the dark blues and recently joined NASTAR which is a ski training and racing organisation in the USA and Canada. I am also keen on rock music and have enjoyed the experience of attending a concert in Norway performed by the original members of Black Sabbath.
